Snowdrops and Pansies, in bloom now!

March 13, 2016

Fleur de Louise

The warm weather has brought flowers to Minnesota a few weeks early and the snowdrops are blooming.

The Snowdrops, Galanthus nivalis, in my garden (above) have been blooming for a week already. These early flowers grow from bulbs that should be planted in the fall or they can also be divided in the spring after flowering when the leaf is still "in the green".

If you don't have any early Snowdrops and are anxious for a little color in your gardens, Pansies can be set outdoors now. In fact, these cool season annuals are grown all over Europe and in warmer areas of the U.S. as winter flowers from October to March.

In Minnesota, March is the start to our Pansy season. Our mild weather helps, but Pansies can tolerate snow and even temperatures as low as 25 degrees. If we get a cold snap or hit by snow, just let the Pansies thaw in situ and they will bounce right back! Pansies are available now, let me know if you would like a little spring delivery.
