Flowers bring joy to nursing home residentsOne of the things I am thankful for this Thanksgiving is the privilege to work doing what I love to do and to be able to share my skills and love of flowers with others.
I've been a participating designer in the Afterbloom event, an outreach of the Minneapolis Institute of Art's spring Art in Bloom event, since Afterbloom began. As a floral community, the Art in Bloom designers can donate leftover blooms and/or time and talent to create small floral arrangements which are then delivered to hospice care centers, nursing homes, homeless shelters and other similar community organizations throughout the Twin Cities metro.
Recently as a business, I received a small donation of "left over" flowers after an event. Already out of the cooler for a few days and with the single instruction that the donation could not be sold, I took my inspiration from Afterbloom and turned my extras into a fun morning of designing small bouquets to give away.
I reached out to Greeley Health Care Nursing Home in Stillwater and told them that I wanted to share the joy of flowers with their residents. They happily agreed and asked for some arrangements for their dining rooms. But I was also told that there were a few residents who never receive visitors, much less flowers.
I knew what I had to do. Playing with flowers truly makes my heart sing and I sincerely hope that the small floral creations I made for those residents put a little joy in their hearts too.
This Thanksgiving remember, sometimes the small things are big things to others. Have a wonderful holiday. |
