For 51 years Dayton's and now Macy's has ushered in spring with it's annual Flower Show which opens this Sunday and runs March 20-April 3.
Each year's show has a different theme. This year the show will celebrate our country's varied landscapes in seven distinct gardens. According to the Macy's website, "The story will be told through flora indigenous to our nation’s regions to celebrate iconic destinations from sea to shining sea."
Construction for the elaborate flower show begins in January and takes more than 3,000 hours to complete. It takes 9 full days to plant the flower show and 4 days to remove the gardens. Approximately 30 truckloads are needed to deliver the several thousand plants and more than 180 cubic yards soil to install the gardens.
This year's centerpiece of the All-American garden is a fourteen foot tall Lady Liberty's torch, featuring over 120 stems of Oncidium Orchids to represent the flame. The torch is under planted with Yoshino Cherry Trees and the appropriately named 'Liberty' Hosta.
The Macy's Flower Show is held in the 8th Floor Auditorium of the Macy's store downtown Minneapolis during regular business hours from March 20-April 3. Admission is free. For more information visit the Macy's website social.macys.com/flowershow/#about
