Around Town: Como Conservatory Orchid Show

January 27, 2016

Around Town

Looking for a Tropical escape from the January weather? Warm up at the Winter Carnival Orchid Show at Como Conservatory January 30-31st

Aren't we lucky? This weekend's weather is shaping up to be a natural break from the frigid cold, but whatever the weather, the Como Conservatory and the Winter Carnival Orchid Show are a retreat from the cold and grey with the lush green tropical foliage as back drop to the vibrant jewel colors of hundreds of orchids that will be on display.

This following text is condensed from the Gardener's Blog at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.

The St. Paul Winter Carnival is fast approaching and the horticulture staff at the Conservatory are preparing their orchid entries for the Winter Carnival Orchid Show to be held Saturday January 30th and Sunday January 31st from 10am-4pm.

This is a joint effort between the Conservatory and the Orchid Society of Minnesota and is an incredible exhibition of hundreds of orchids from the private collections of Society members and the Conservatory's extensive collection. Judges from the American Orchid Society will award the best entries in several different categories.

As part of the Winter Carnival, there is an admission fee of $5 per adult and $3 per child ages 3-12 ($1 off with a Winter Carnival button.) For more information:

Several vendors are also on site with orchids available for purchase. Tip! If you plan to buy a plant, bring along a pillow case or small blanket to help protect the plant from point of sale to your car (in addition to the wrapping the vendor provides)- also, plan to come straight home or bring the orchid inside if you leave the car. Orchids are tropical plants and don't like Minnesota winters!
